Independent Photo-Shoot: Tone

In this independent shoot I would like to work with the formal element of tone. I want to move away fro, the magazine look that i did in my previous work to do with tone and only focus on the models and the overall look of tone and how I can create different styles using this particular formal element.

The use of softer tones creates a dreamy and feminine effect. it decreases the vision of wrinkles giving a smoother effect on the image. this also gives off a kind approach towards the viewer as it makes the object in the image a cutesy and soft look to it.

I think the use of the harsher use of tone increases the texture of the image along with making the picture become more serious, hard, more masculine and intimidating towards the viewer; due to the increase of lines/wrinkles.

Zone 0 is pitch black, giving no detail in an image. Zone 10 is pure white, also containing no detail. Zone 5 is mid grey. When using a light meter, either external or in-camera the meter will always expose for Zone 5, whether this will give you the best image or not.

Firstly we must understand how a light meter or in-camera light sensor works. A light meter will always expose for zone 5-mid grey, meaning that if you point your camera into a dark bin, on auto exposure, a grey image will be produced. Similarly if you point a camera at some bright white snow on auto, the camera will give a grey toned snow.

I was automatically drawn to the focus on the mans face with the cigarette in his mouth. The use of tone in this is also good in my opinion as it has the range from 0 to 10. I feel like it could've used a few more lighter tones however, i like the fact that it is darker as it creates a serious and more mysterious tone to the picture. i would like to use a range of light to dark tones in my work to depending if i want harsher or softer tones.  I like that the background is blurred because if it wasn't the image would be too busy and you wouldn't get the same quality if it was in focus in every aspect of the photograph.

I prefer the lighter tones in this picture along with the contrast of the darker parts of it as well. i would like to mimic this and have a contrast of light and dark tones in my final images to create a neutral yet abstract look to my work. i am not so keen on the shadows in this and i wouldn't like to have a shadowing effect in my work as i feel for my images it may not work. I might experiment with shadows in my work to create a wider range of tone in my work.

I like to use of muted colours in this image however, i think for the use of tone i would like my images to be in black and white so my viewers are easily able to select the different zones of 0 - 10 in my images. I like the use of water in this picture and it creates a sense of seriousness in this piece. the use of water makes the image seem lighter than it should be but i like that. i'm not sure it would be suitable for me to use water in my photo-shoot but i think if i were to use the natural elements in my work it could create really good abstract pieces.

This picture has a mysterious dark look , this is similar to the first image but in a different way. the softer tones are focused on the woman and the reflection and the darker tones in the background. This centers the viewers attention to the model in the seat. I like how you can easily and distinctively tell the different various tones from 0 to 10. There are mainly very dark and serious tones to the background and the light, soft and feminine tone to the woman in the image, this gives off the impression that this is a carefree woman in a busy or dangerous lifestyle.
