AO2 Artist Research

Tony Katai

Tony is an american photographer and director he has been doing this since 2008. He came across a band called 'Mars Argo' and did a few photo shoots for them and that is when he was beginning to get noticed in his career.

I was drawn to this photo when I came across it from Katai. It involves one of the members from the band Mars Argo. It has used muted tones so that the darker shadow really stand out in contrast to the pastel colours in the rest of the picture. This picture draws your eye to her skin tone as it stands out from the background, dress and shadow.

I like the colours in this photo because its very bright and quite blocky in the sense that there is only white brown and pink. These different colours really make the sunglasses stand out. There is also the contrast between the pink and the white which sets up a candy like theme in this picture. In my opinion this helps to draw the viewers eye to each individual shape and colour.

In this contact sheet I wanted to create a modern doll like look. I did this because I was inspired by Tony Katai with his work with Mars Argo. In the photo that I analysed the lady looks like a cute child's doll. I tried to re-create this in my photo shoot. I would like to edit these in a way that i can mimic Katai's work with the bright coloured backgrounds and the muted tones. Hopefully, I'll be able to experiment with Photoshop so I can get a feel of what Tony had to do in his images.

Open up your image. Go to the channel panel and ctrl-click on the RGB channel.
Make a new layer and fill it with white (not too harsh) then inverse the selection and fill it with black (again, not too harsh). Change the blending mode to multiply.
Now you create a hue/saturation adjustment layer and set the saturation and lightness to around 40% depending on your image.

The process is in descending order from 1 to 4.

in these edits, i wanted to change the background of the photos to create a hazy effect but still very light and dreamy. so to begin with, like i do with all my edits, i create a background copy. I then use the quick selection tool and selected the model and inversed my selection so i was able to change the colour of the background. i then make a hue/saturation layer and change the variables to make the background the colours i'd like to use. at this point the background is still very dull, so i go through this process again to increase the brightness of this image. this edit gives off a 1980's vibe where Sindy dolls were very popular around the globe. this wasn't necissarily the look i was after but I'm still pleased with the outcome.
