Texture & Pattern

Pattern is an underlying structure that organises surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner. Pattern can be described as a repeating unit of shape or form, but it can also be thought of as the 'skeleton' that organises the parts of a composition.
Texture refers to the tactile qualities of the physical surface of the object. In other words, how does the surface of the work feel when you touch it?
The challenge of seeing and capturing texture is mostly based one one element (light). Texture can be accentuated by the side light of early sunny mornings or early evenings, or by overhead light when the sun is vertical and high in the sky.
Shelly Still

This photo was drawn to my attention as the sequins give off a smooth but scratchy look to them and how they could feel against the human hand. I like the zoomed in approach and how light and colourful it is. Shelly really capture the light reflecting from these sequins rather well and the lighting makes these sequins look this way. I also visually enjoy the way she still used colour in her textured approached picture as many other photographers use a black and white effect for more detail. If I decide to use colour in my work I think it'd be difficult to get a similar approach but I do think it might look better than black and white.

This picture appealed to me as it seems like a smooth but jagged piece of thick paper. I like the almost rough look to this image. I would like to recreate this look in a similar way but with a different object. I don't know how I would do this but I know I will like to give off the similar effect in my work too.

I like the smooth and silky approach in this image. It seems like it would be soft on skin. I also like how the metallic looking circles are iridescent, this gives off the effect of them being different colour spots. I would like to use different colours and shades to give off further effects and details within my work. I'm not sure how I would like to edit my photos yet but I know I would like to use Photoshop to make my photos look more abstract and different.
Contact Sheet

In this photo shoot i used a few of my crystals which include : Amethyst , Citrine, Amazonite, Carnelian, Zebra Jasper, Pink Agate, Rose Quatz, Green Aventurine, Red Jasper, Clear Quartz, Sodalite and Malachite. most of these images are over exposed or under exposed. there are only a few with a good amount of lighting. However, I'm sure that in my edits I can make them represent Shelly Still's work. There is also an accidental hand in this photo shoot where i was trying to set up the crystals. In my last few photos I used my raw Amazonite crystal, put Sodalite and Malachite around it in a horseshoe shape to show how people work with crystals in their every day lives (like good luck charms). In my edits id like to crop most of them so they look very close up like in Shelly Still's work. I would also like to play about with the brightness of these images to give them a better texture. Unfortunately, my photo shoot hasn't included much pattern. In my next piece I will try to use both parts of the subject to improve on my work.
