Independent Photo-Shoot: Shape

In this independent shoot I would like to work with the formal element of shape. I would like to continue working with people rather than objects as I find it gives a better aesthetic to my work then other things.

A shape is an area enclosed by a line. It could be just an outline or it could be shaded in.

Shapes can be either geometric, like a circle, square or triangle, or irregular.

When drawing shapes, you must consider the size and position as well as the shape of the area around it. The shapes created in the spaces between shapes are referred to as negative space.

Martin Waltz

i was drawn to this image by Martin Waltz as you can clearly see the shape of the dark silhouette against the bright white lights in the background. I would like to use something similar in my work like a net curtain or blinds to show off the shape of bodies. however, i don't think i would like to use such a focused look in my work but to have it come out rather blurred instead to give off a hazy state that people live in today's society.

I like this photograph as it is focused on how tranquil the streets should be. i feel like the photographer wanted to portray how going out would be less intimidating if life was simpler. I like the use of the minimalist shapes in this image (the shadows of the walking man, the bench and the seated man. i would like to use the simple shapes that people can make using their limbs against a window or a background that has a source of light coming from behind it.

I liked the shapes in this photograph as the people are moving but the world around is stood still. I like the way Martin Waltz has mainly used street photography. However, i don't think i would like to use this genre of photography in my work. I think I would prefer to work with silhouettes of people and the different shapes their bodies can make, rather than everyday life street photography.

I like the simplicity of this image; how there are only stone steps (which could lead to any building) and two peoples legs and feet hanging over the edges. I would like to incorporate simpleness in my work so my viewers feel like they can either relate to my photos or be drawn to them because of this. I would like to use the majority of my models bodies in my work or all of it.

In my photo-shoot i wanted to show off the shapes of bodies in the simplest way possible. Halfway in to the shoot i accidentally took a picture out of focus however, i liked the outcome of this. i then decided to keep this aesthetic to my work as you can still see the silhouette of the models, it is still a simple look and it has a different approach to it now as well. One of the things that I would change about this shoot is the lighting behind the blinds, I would of preferred it to be a bit brighter and consistent throughout the whole shoot.

Edits and Developments

In my edits I want to keep them simple, so i have decided to put them into black and white and crop them so the focus is on the bodies and their shape. One of the images i had to blur using Photoshop to keep a continuous approach to my work and how i wanted to use a similar look to Martin waltz and change it a little bit to make it my own ideas and the inspiration helped me develop this further in my edits. I think to further develop my editing skills i could have brightened to light behind and darken the model to get a better effect of the blurred silhouette.
